Borne out of tragedy and involving huge amounts of risk and ingenuity the DC-3 Dakota played an immense role in shaping the world today. It launched modern air travel in the 1930’s, acted as the backbone of Allied air transport in the II World War and served in civilian or military form (DC-47) for more than 80 years since its first flight.
The chorus of the Gooney Bird song, a tribute to the DC-3, says it all:
THEY PATCH HER UP WITH MASKING TAPE,
WITH PAPER CLIPS AND STRINGS,
AND STILL SHE FLIES, SHE NEVER DIES.
